Last week’s visit to Shanghai Jewish Refugee Memorial was productive – we got to know the arduous journey of survival of the Jewish people, and how Chinese tried to help. We were impressed by the selfless actions of the Shanghai people – despite their own poor condition, they would still generously support the Jewish Refugees. As one of the Refugees recalled, he was warmly treated by the locals – everyday a rice cake seller would share the young boy a free piece of the cake. “The cake business was what she made a living on.” the man said. Through this and all other anecdotes we saw true liberality and compassion – even under Japanese Fascism oppression and poverty, those Chinese insisted on helping the refugees. And that is what eventually overthrowed Fascism – people with good will sympathized on each other, and united a staunch defense.

This memorial also provides some cause and effect links. For example, Germany’s constant humanitarian actions can be explained by this history. The Germans are concerned with the actions in World War II – the “Krystallnacht”, Auschwitz, and many other racism actions murdering millions of innocent Jewish. As an effort to compensate to this world, Germany adopted approximately 150 million refugees from Middle East, Africa, and many other countries in war.
