What Will I Study?

The political science major is a broad-based liberal arts degree which requires extensive reading, writing, analysis and critical thinking. Coursework is complemented with a variety of public service internships for which students receive academic credit. Faculty within the political science program serve as mentors for students and work closely with each student for the purpose of academic and career advising. Students who graduate with a degree in political science are well prepared to attend law school, or graduate school. Political science graduates also are prepared to enter public employment at the federal, state or local level, along with a number of jobs in the private sector.

The political science major is a 36 credit degree program which can include up to 9 credits of field internships. The degree also requires 6 credits of supporting coursework in a foreign language.

Courses are offered in four major areas:

• American Politics
• Comparative Politics
• International Relations
• Political Theory

What are my career options with a Political Science degree?

For those students who choose to enter the work force upon graduation, the political science degree provides excellent preparation for employment in both the public and private sectors. Political Science graduates pursue a variety of careers including law, business, public administration, homeland security, foreign service, teaching, journalism, not-for-profit management, international organizations, public opinion polling, campaign management, and elective office.

English Language Requirements: TOEFL score of 550 on the paper-based test or 80 on the TOEFL iBT; IELTS – 6.5 PTE – 62; iTEP – 5; ELS English for Academic Purposes - Level 112; Education First (EF) - C1; Cambridge Advanced English – 58; Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English (CAE) – 5.5; Cambridge Certificate in Proficiency in English (CPE) – 5.5.
