The Communication Studies major, with concentrations in Advertising Media/Public Relations and Sports Media, is a distinct major that moves Sacred Heart University students through a unique educational pathway. It has its roots in the fields of journalism, public relations, sports journalism, sports broadcasting, and the creative media aspects of advertising. With its emphasis on media production and the cultural and critical interrogation of the media, the Communication Studies major at SHU features:

The Advertising Media/Public Relations Concentration is designed to give students the opportunity to engage with both the theory and practice of Public Relations and Advertising. Majors who choose this concentration will work with faculty with extensive backgrounds in the field, and will also have the opportunity to learn from industry professionals during regularly scheduled workshops taking place throughout the school year. Because of our ideal location and our reputation for educating well-prepared and motivated students, our majors regularly intern at industry-leading companies in the advertising and public relations field, and we have numerous alumni working in this area of the media industry.

The Sports Media Concentration is specifically designed from a humanities tradition to blend together the theory and practice of studying sports media and to capitalize on Sacred Heart University’s ideal geographic location in the heart of the US sports media industry. Students will receive intensive training in the art and craft of digital storytelling across multiple media platforms from traditional television to contemporary social media as they move through a program designed to produce responsible and participatory citizens with well-developed critical thinking skills.

A curricular design that regularly brings media professionals together with students and culminates in a capstone experience that offers our majors the opportunity to showcase their skills and talents in a project of their choosing

English Language Requirements: TOEFL score of 550 on the paper-based test or 80 on the TOEFL iBT; IELTS – 6.5 PTE – 62; iTEP – 5; ELS English for Academic Purposes - Level 112; Education First (EF) - C1; Cambridge Advanced English – 58; Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English (CAE) – 5.5; Cambridge Certificate in Proficiency in English (CPE) – 5.5.
