Two years ago, an ill-fated incident derailed all my plans and changed my life forever. I was playing in a soccer match. As the opposing team's forward advanced towards our goal, I leapt into a slide tackle to intercept the ball. I thought I had timed it perfectly, but their forward player tripped and accidently landed on me. The cleats from his soccer shoes dug into my right ankle, and I was overwhelmed with an excruciating pain that felt like my ankle was bashed in by a hammer. The MRI results showed that my right ankle contained fluid that couldn't be removed, and my ligaments were also damaged. I was told I could not play any sports for at least six months, and that I could never again play sports constantly for over two hours. I was crushed. At first, I simply couldn't accept the news, and felt depressed for several days.
One day, I read in an article that Xavier Labelle, one of the 13 survivors, couldn't return to the rink as a player anymore but had instead become the assistant coach in his hometown hockey team. At that moment, I realized I can pursue my passion for sports through a different way. While I can no longer turn pro due to my injuries, I can help inspiring young athletes to become professional players in their futures. As my injuries healed, I remembered that Jaime, my Canadian friend and basketball coach, was in search of an assistant coach. I immediately called to volunteer and was graciously accepted. Seeing the progress made by these young players reminded me of when I first began playing basketball eight years ago. In my now second year as an assistant, I've noticed my own development as a coach too. Jaime let me coach some young players on my own, a challenge which equally improves my leadership skills. Every class leaves me exhausted, but seeing my work reflected in the players' growth gives me a deep sense of pride and determination. I realized certain experiences are only possible as a coach and not a player and began to truly value the opportunity to mature from a different role within the sports world.
While my initial understanding of being successful in sports was to become a professional athlete, I now understand I can be impactful in far more ways than one. People who have passion in sports don't necessarily have to become a sports player. I believe having the ability to build a successful team is my way to securing the "W" for the team and myself.
