专业概况

在这里学什么？

Our Department is a diverse community of deeply engaged faculty and graduate students, and our MA program is designed to promote students’ academic and professional growth. The core course sequence for MA students provides a strong foundation in Sociological theory, research, and analysis, while elective courses and faculty mentoring help develop students’ expertise in their chosen areas of Sociological interest.

The MA degree has two primary components: coursework and a capstone project consisting of a MA thesis, paper, or examination. There is a degree required minimum of 30 graduate credits. Thirteen credits are fulfilled by required courses.

Graduates of our MA program have gone on to significant success. Many have continued on an academic path, enrolling as PhD students at UWM or other universities. Others have found fulfilling careers in applied research at government agencies, non-profit organizations, and private businesses large and small. Some examples include:

• research associate, International Foundation of Employee Benefit Plans
• survey design and statistical analyst, Spring Arbor University, Michigan
• research specialist, Center for Urban Population Health, University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee
• analyst, United States Census, United States Government

The MA thesis or paper is a meaningful project that, while limited in scope and clearly manageable to complete within the two-year MA program, helps develop the student’s expertise as a Sociologists and results in a final product that exhibits the student’s skills. Each student works closely with a MA thesis/paper committee, constructed by the student and composed of Department faculty. This committee guides the student’s development of a topic and execution of the resulting project. The MA thesis or paper is typically completed through enrollment in SOCIAL 790.

为来自中国的学生设计 Applicants for admission to the UWM Graduate School must have the following: A baccalaureate degree or its equivalent as determined by the UWM Centre on International Education, from a regionally accredited institution, completed before the first term of enrolment in the Graduate School. Students applying to approved integrated bachelor’s/master’s programs are exempt from this requirement, A minimum cumulative undergraduate grade point average (GPA) of 2.75 on a 4.0 scale, or an equivalent measure on a grading system that does not use a 4.0 scale. TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) results with a minimum required score of 79 on the Internet-based TOEFL (IBT) and a minimum recommended sub-score of 18 in each skill). IELTS (International English Language Testing System) results with a minimum required score of 6.5, with minimum recommended sub-score of 6.0 in each skill.
