Western New England University will inspire and support you to become a true student of law and a skilled practitioner. In the JD program, you will learn the science of legal study as a methodology to analyze legal and social issues.

CONCENTRATIONS

Business Law Concentration

In today’s business environment lawyers need to have both a broad and a deep understanding of the legal obligations affecting businesses. Many different legal subjects affect businesses. One of the goals of the Business Law Concentration’s distribution requirements is to ensure that students are exposed to a wide range of corporate and commercial topics. At the same time, students must develop a level of expertise not just through the foundation provided by the required core courses and the immersion in the elective credits, but also by learning how to apply the lessons learned in those courses to real situations in a practical learning environment.

Criminal Law Concentration

Criminal law and procedure is a fascinating area of study, preparing students for a wide range of career paths after graduation. Western New England University School of Law alumni work in all facets of the criminal justice system, as prosecutors and defense attorneys, in government and private practice.

Estate Planning Concentration

The School of Law's Estate Planning Concentration curriculum merges business, tax, and elder law into a well-rounded program. Students pursuing a concentration in estate planning will engage in skills-based learning while broadening their substantive knowledge in several areas of law.

Gender and Sexuality Concentration

Legal issues relating to gender, sexual orientation, and gender identity are at the forefront of many areas of law, including civil rights, family law, and employment discrimination. In this concentration, students complete studies focusing on individual rights and social justice movements as well as problems of theory. Course offerings in the concentration range widely from Domestic Violence, to Gender Identity & the Law, to Sports, Law & Culture.

International and Comparative Law Concentration

Legal practice continues to globalize at a rapid pace, and forward-looking lawyers must anticipate that their practices will involve transnational issues, even where the clients are local. Based on this understanding, the School of Law offers a concentration in international and comparative law. The concentration requires a foundational course in public international law which provides grounding in the theoretical framework for understanding international governance.

Public Interest Law Concentration

A public interest concentration prepares students for a wide range of career paths, ranging from positions with non-profit organizations or within the government sector, including the representation of children, representation of criminal defendants, the provision of services to low income individuals, as well as impact litigation.

Real Estate Concentration

Real estate law is often referred to as the bread and butter of the traditional general practice of law, and indeed it is, but with modifications. Conveyancing and title work continues to be a common aspect of real estate work for the general practitioner, but the funding of those transactions requires the practitioner to have a working knowledge of real estate finance and the current issues and pitfalls a client may experience.

Note: International students who have been admitted for Fall 2020 and are unable to travel to the US may defer their admission to Spring 2021.
