“The gladdest moment in human life is a departure into unknown lands.”
—— Sir Richard Burton
People always say that it is better to see something once than hear about it a thousand times. And therefore, my mother, brother and I caught a flight to Tokyo at Hongqiao Airport on August 3rd. It was the first time that we travelled abroad together on our own and all of us felt very excited. When we arrived at the Haneda Airport, it was almost midnight and we quickly settled into the hotel and went to sleep.
On the second day, I felt an urge to go to Akihabara and thus we went there first. It was a paradise for people who like anime and electronic products. Since I’m a big fan of anime, so Akihabara is one of my favorite places to visit in Japan. After enjoying the culture of anime, we went to Tokyo Tower at night. When the lights were turned on, the red and white Tokyo Tower looked so wonderful that I lost myself in simply looking at it. Then we went up to the 150-meter-high observation deck of Tokyo Tower, where you can enjoy the night view of the whole city.
The next day became quite different. When I woke up late during the day, I found that my mother and brother had already left for Ginza without me. I therefore decided to travel to the place I would like to visit instead. Finally, I arrived at Nozoki Zaka, a famous steep slope once appearing in a famous anime. It was a 30-degree slope and seemed very hard to walk to the top, but I saw a man riding a bicycle up there!
Then on the following day, we took the Shinkansen Line to Kobe. We visited two places there. One of them was Kazamidori no Yakata, and the other was the Kobe Bridge. Kazamidori no Yakata is a western styled villa, through which you could get a picture of the people’s life decades ago and also enjoy the western styled furniture. The red Kobe Bridge was so beautiful and you could always enjoy the view of the Port of Kobe and the breeze blowing on the bridge.
Then we visited a very unique place, Nara, on the third day. There were countless wild deer everywhere, waiting for you to purchase deer biscuits to feed them. But you need to be really careful when getting close to them because all of the deer in Nara are wild and they will probably attack you. Therefore, don’t try to tease them, or you will be injured.
The last day, we went to Osaka for its delicious food. In ancient times, Osaka was called ‘The World’s Kitchen’. Through this nick name, you will surely figure out how many delicacies Osaka has. We kept eating for a whole day!I suggest trying the Okonomi-yaki and the Takoyaki. I think they are the most delicious food I have ever had in Osaka.
This trip to Japan is truly an unforgettable experience for me and my family. We ate the delicacies, enjoyed the wonderful views, and most importantly got to know the people and culture there, which all helps to expand my vision and knowledge as a teenager. Just as Gustave Flaubert once said, “Travel makes one modest. You see what a tiny place you occupy in the world.”
