The Bachelor of Engineering (Robotics and Mechatronics)(Honours)/Bachelor of Computer Science course provides students with a focus on the application of advanced computing techniques on the design and operation of robotic and mechatronic systems. It combines mechanical engineering, electrical engineering and electronic and software engineering in the design, development and control of diverse systems used in the manufacturing, medicine and the service industries. Graduates of this course will have extensive skills in integrating engineering with software development, particularly relating to multi-disciplinary projects, and will have developed experience in working on team projects.

For the completion, students are required to complete a total of 40 units (500 credit points) consisting of:

11 Engineering core units of study (15 credit points) 16 units of study from Robotics and Mechatronics Major (200 credit points) 5 Computer Science core units of study (5 credit points) 8 Software Development units of study (100 credits points) 1 compulsory, not-for-credit units (0 credit points)

Career opportunities:

Graduates from this course can take up careers in a wide spectrum of industries including robotics, automation, aerospace, chemical, defence, automotive and manufacturing where complex software plays a major role, as well as in businesses that require extensive computer support, such as banking and commerce. Contributions can be made to these industries in a variety of roles including design engineer, systems maintenance and design engineer, software engineer, project planner, product designer and project manager.

Course learning outcome

Students who successfully complete the Bachelor of Engineering (Robotics and Mechatronics) (Honours) will be able to:

  • apply coherent and advanced knowledge of the chosen major in engineering in diverse contexts and applications using critical thinking and judgment
  • apply knowledge of research principles and methods to plan and execute a piece of research with some independence, as preparation for research higher degrees
  • apply problem solving, design and decision-making methodologies to identify and provide innovative solutions to complex problems with intellectual independence
  • apply abstraction, mathematics and engineering fundamentals to the analysis, design and operation of a model, using appropriate engineering methods and tools
  • communicate proficiently in professional practice to a variety of audiences
  • demonstrate professionalism, integrity, ethical conduct, professional accountability

Students who successfully complete the Bachelor of Computer Science will be able to:

  • apply a broad and coherent knowledge of computer science and software development in diverse contexts and domains using critical thinking and judgment
  • apply appropriate methods and contemporary tools to the scoping, analysis, design, construction, verification and operation of software systems
  • communicate proficiently to a variety of audiences, function as an effective member or leader of a team, and use the basic tools and practices of project management within project work

Graduates are eligible to register as Graduate Engineers with Board of Engineering Malaysia (BEM) and to apply for graduate membership with Engineers Australia (EA) and the Australian Computer Society (ACS).
