The Xinhe North Cross Dragons Sports Program

Xinhe North Cross High School recently hosted two sports meetings. This is the first year of the Xinhe North Cross sports program and students are very excited! The school has a nickname, the Dragons, and the girls teams call themselves the lady dragons. Each participant in the sports program also has a numbered jersey. The Xinhe North Cross patch and jerseys were designed in part by Claudia in 12th grade. We have joined the Big 12 Conference, an association of 12 excellent Shanghai high schools.

On December 22nd, Fudan University High School visited to play girl’s and boy’s basketball, as well girl’s and boy’s badminton. The event was held on Xinzhong campus. Highlights on the girls basketball side included an excellent shot made by Victoria in 9th grade. Although it was the first game ever for the girls basketball team, the team played their best and the coaches were very proud.

The boy’s basketball team lost a fairly close match. Some outstanding players were Ziven and Irving in 10th grade, and also Jonnie and David in 12th grade. It was Irving’s first game back after suffering an injury earlier in the year, so it was awesome to see him out there playing aggressively and attacking the basket.

The badminton team continued their improvement as well, and because of the bigger gym everyone got to play more matches.

On December 28th, Jin Cai High School visited our school, after we had visited their school in November. Improvement by all the teams was evident even in defeat. Some outstanding athletes in badminton included Leo in 9th grade and Lizzie in 11th grade, who won a doubles match. In basketball, the boys did not play a match but several members of the boys team helped out with the girls team, who has somewhat less experience. Thanks especially to John in 9th grade, and Haywood in 10th grade!

The sports matches have created some opportunities for student volunteers to help out with scorekeeping and timing, as well as ensuring our visitors have plenty of water, know where the bathrooms are, and feel comfortable at our school. Both Fudan High School and Jin Cai gave thanks for our student volunteers and hosts. Shoutout to Jason in 11th grade, the student body president, for helping to organize volunteers. Some of the key volunteers included Cytheria, Angel, Travis, Logan, Claire, Diana, Victor, Frank, and Jonnie. There were so many that I can’t remember all their names!

The sports program is on break for final exams and winter holiday but will be returning in March with several matches already being discussed. We may be a small school, and we may be new to sports, but we will not be beat in our enthusiasm for the game, our sportsmanship, and our effort!
