Overview

Our Special Care Dentistry Master’s programme will give you a theoretical foundation in the subject and develop your clinical skills so that you can competently manage dental patients with special care needs including patients with intellectual, social and medical special needs, physical and mental disabilities and genetic conditions. We put particular emphasis on the use of both pharmacological and non- pharmacological behaviour management techniques including cognitive bahavioural therapy, analgesia, conscious sedation and general anaesthesia.

Course detail

Provides a theoretical foundation and develops appropriate clinical skills for the care of patients needing special care with particular emphasis on the use of behaviour management techniques, analgesia, sedation and general anaesthesia. It also covers training in research methods and their practical application. You will also undertake a research project. Research focus is on the management of individuals requiring special care and the impact of providing this service for the community. For clinicians working in general practice, community, hospital and/or university departments who wish to become specialists and leaders in this area of dental care. To increase knowledge about dental care for individuals with special needs and the impact of providing this service for the community.

Teaching and assessment

We will use a delivery method that will ensure students have a rich, exciting experience from the start. Face to face teaching will be complemented and supported with innovative technology so that students also experience elements of digital learning and assessment. We will assess the Science of Sedation & Special Care Dentistry and Clinical Sedation & Special Care Dentistry modules through unseen written exams. The Clinical module will be assessed through coursework and clinical/oral exams. Your Research module will be assessed on your research project and by oral exam. The study time and assessment methods detailed above are typical and give you a good indication of what to expect. However, they may change if the course modules change.
