Collaborative Piano

The BFA in Music: Collaborative Piano curriculum is one of few such undergraduate programs offered nationwide. It offers training for pianists anticipating careers in vocal accompanying, as well as coaching art song, opera, and musical theatre. Students receive weekly lessons in collaborative piano, as well as solo piano, and piano technique, and participate in rehearsals and performances for the UWM Opera Theatre, Milwaukee Opera Theatre, and UWM choirs.

Guitar

In the BFA: Guitar program students choose a primary style among classical, jazz, and finger-style guitar. Guitar majors take classes in guitar-related courses like repertoire, ensemble, pedagogy, and guitar history.

Music Composition and Technology

The Music, BFA: Music Composition and Technology program fosters development in instrumental, vocal, and electro acoustic composition, with an emphasis on contemporary and experimental techniques.

Music History and Literature

The BFA in Music History and Literature program focuses on the historical and critical study of music, and prepares the student for further study in musicology, ethnomusicology, music librarianship, or music criticism. Students enjoy access to an extensive music library, including printed & digital scores, CDs, LPs, books about music, and streaming audio. In addition, students experience training in librarianship skills through work with the Coordinated Program in Music Librarianship – a joint degree between the School of Information Studies and the Peck School of the Arts Department of Music.

Piano

Our performance programs are led by renowned performing artist faculty. Piano majors take private lessons and master classes, and perform regularly in concerts and recitals.

Strings

Our competitive performance programs are led by renowned performing artist faculty. Students regularly perform as soloists, chamber musicians, and orchestral musicians while earning their degree. They are prepared for modern, multifaceted professional careers as performers and/or teachers. The program offers a thorough grounding in instrumental technique and repertory, and broad and continuous experience in performance.

Versatile Voice

The market for professional singers is changing opera singers are performing in musicals, Broadway performers are singing operas, and pop singer training is improving dramatically. UWM is out in front of these changes with our BFA: Versatile Voice, a program that is broad enough to cover many genres and flexible enough to reflect each student’s interest.

Voice

The charge of the Voice Area is to teach skills for future success in music, to offer solid vocal technique and knowledge of vocal health. This training is built upon a foundation of history, theory, and a varied repertoire of vocal music. A spirit of genuine collaboration both within and outside of the voice area offers experiences in many musical styles, fostering future performers, pedagogues and leaders in the arts.

Winds, Brass, and Percussion

The BFA: Winds, Brass, and Percussion program is designed to prepare students for professional performing careers and studio teaching. The goal of the program is to graduate students who are expert performers and knowledgeable music scholars. Students take private lessons and master classes; and perform solo recitals, chamber music, orchestral music, and wind band music while working on their degrees.
