New England College’s Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing program is a truly transformative learning experience for writers. The Master of Fine Arts (MFA) delivers a rigorous, individualized program, with three dynamic degree tracks: Fiction, Poetry, and Dual‐Genre.

The MFA’s academic model is studio/research: integrating substantial work in the academic study and creative production of literary art. Students are individually mentored by accomplished, award‐winning faculty members who are among the most compelling writers in their genres, and who also are known for their excellence in teaching.

Four semester, 64 credit MFA program Hybrid online/low-residency model Every semester begins with an MFA Residency at New England College’s Henniker, NH campus

Additionally, New England College’s MFA program is the first and only low‐residency program to offer Graduate Teaching Assistantships, providing students opportunities to gain relevant teaching experience for future academic careers. Students also have opportunities for specialized study in areas such as translation, cross‐genre writing/hybrid forms, editing and publishing, new media, and performance.

Understand the history, theories, and movements that have shaped and continue to influence the writing, reading, and critical reception of literary works.

Be able to locate your own writing in historical, theoretical, and cultural contexts.

Be able to engage in rigorous critical discourse on your own writing and the work of others.

Demonstrate a keen awareness of the writer’s craft and effective use of craft in your own writing.

Effectively employ skills and methods of revision in your writing process

Apply what you have learned and practiced to the production of a substantial body of high‐quality literary work.

Demonstrate the skills, knowledge, and discipline necessary for successful postgraduate professional life in creative writing

Actively and ethically engage in your academic, literary, geographic, and cultural communities

Meaningfully contribute to literary/artistic culture and the advancement of the literary arts

MFA Creative Writing Dual-focus Track:

(80 credits)

• Creative Writing Workshops (10 credits total)
• Creative Writing Seminars (10 credits total)
• Mentorship Study: Creative Writing (16 credits completed in primary genre) Mentorship Study: Social Practice (8 credits/1 semester)
• Creative and Critical Process (8 credits)
• Craft, Theory, and Practice I and II (6 credits) Form and Theory I-V (10 credits)
• Thesis I-IV (8 credits)
• Advanced Theory and Practice (2 credits ) Professional Practice (2 credits)
• Submission of Creative Thesis*
• Final Residency: Lecture, Public Reading, Thesis Defense

Requirements

The Master of Fine Arts is a terminal degree in the field of Creative Writing, and it requires at least two years (four semesters/five campus residencies) of intensive full‐time study and the completion of at least 64 credits for a single‐genre degree or two and a half years (five semesters/six campus residencies) of intensive full time study and the completion of at least 80 credits for a dual‐track degree.

为来自中国的学生设计 All graduate programs require a minimum undergraduate grade point average of 2.75 on a 4.0 scale, or a demonstrated ability (typically a combination of academic and professional achievement) to succeed in a rigorous graduate program. Other English Language Requirements: TOEFL Paper based test – 550.
