The Bachelor of Arts in Criminal Justice program is an exciting combination of academics and experiential learning taught by attorneys and professionals in the criminal justice field. Our small classes provide an opportunity to develop individual relationships with faculty and to enhance understanding by examining how “real world” experiences relate to theory.

You will be introduced to the field and learn through experienced faculty, guest speakers and visits to local courts, law enforcement agencies, and correctional facilities. In addition, all courses incorporate a variety of hands-on exercises designed to engage and enhance your understanding of criminal investigation, law enforcement, and legal systems.

Internships are individually designed based on your interests. Past internships have included placement with police departments, prosecutor’s offices, probation departments, and victim assistance programs. Combined with academics and a strong liberal arts foundation, you will be well-positioned for diverse careers in the field.

Criminal Justice: Learn by Doing at New England College

  • Criminal Investigations. You will explore techniques for the collection and preservation of physical evidence, crime scene photography, blood spatter analysis, lifting and storing fingerprints, crime scene reconstruction and the investigative processes applicable to specific crimes by “doing”. The final exam requires students, working in teams, to apply what they’ve learned by analyzing a mock crime scene.
  • Criminal Justice Internships. You will have an opportunity, and are strongly encouraged, to work directly with professionals in your chosen area of criminal justice. Internships have included local and regional police departments, prosecutor’s offices, juvenile centers, the NH State Prison, probation departments, and victim assistance programs.
  • Contemporary Law Enforcement. In addition to exploring contemporary law enforcement practices and challenges, you will participate in a two-day law enforcement hiring seminar conducted by law enforcement personnel. The seminar includes exploration of the hiring process, including the police officer entry exam, background investigation process, the polygraph examination, and practice procedures for the oral board/interview phases. You will participate directly in a minimum of two actual law enforcement oral boards/interviews.
  • U.S. Legal Systems. The study of the legal system culminates in a mock trial, where all students alternate roles as attorneys, witnesses and jurors.
  • Issues in Professional Practice. You will prepare for the challenges and responsibilities of working as a criminal justice professional, including the transition from student to employment and opportunities within the field, by preparing resumes, interviewing professionals, and presenting the results of a research project on a contemporary criminal justice issue chosen by you.
