The Bachelor of Arts in Art program is an inspiring journey of self-discovery and artistic development, reflecting the values and advantages of a liberal arts education here at New England College.

You’ll benefit from small class sizes, a fantastic studio environment, and personalized instruction led by a diverse group of faculty made up of professional artists, curators, photographers and designers. All art majors take a series of foundational courses which include drawing, design, photography, art history, and visual literacy courses. These help you develop the material, visual, and intellectual skills necessary for art-making.

We emphasize experiential and engaged learning inside and outside the classroom. Through creative exploration and critical analysis, you will learn to integrate theoretical knowledge with hands-on creative practice. This approach is essential for advanced study and a life of art-making and creativity. As you define your goals and hone your skills, you may develop an art focus:

• Fine Arts Focus includes painting, drawing, printmaking, and sculpture.
• Media Arts Focus includes photography, graphic design, and video.

While these are suggested tracks, we encourage you to take a variety of studio courses in order to explore new mediums and consider unfamiliar creative possibilities.

As you progress through New England College’s Art program, you’ll further investigate the material and visual aspects of art-making while developing a stronger sense of your creative direction and preparing yourself for more self-directed work in our upper-level courses.

Art: Learn by Doing at New England College

• We provide numerous opportunities for you to interact and work directly with practitioners in the field. You participate in artist studio visits, photo and video shoots, exhibition curating and installation, student exhibitions, and trips to galleries and museums throughout New England and abroad.
• Internships are strongly encouraged. New England College Art students have interned with regional artists, design firms, art schools, galleries, and museums. Students have served internships at the National Portrait Gallery of the Smithsonian Institution, the Currier Museum of Art, and Munson-Williams Proctor Museum.
• If you are a studio art major, or interested in pursuing art history study, a Study Abroad semester is extremely valuable.
• Study Away trips are frequently scheduled in conjunction with an Art History class to numerous sites in Europe. Study Away is a short, 1-2 week trip that is an integral part of a class, and usually taken during January or March.
