Anything you wanna share with us about your summer in the US?

“I spent most of my time during July and August in the US, at home, in a town called Croton on Hudson near New York City. I also visited with my family (four brothers and sisters and about 20 nieces and nephews) for a two week family vacation. Every summer we gather for about at the beach in New Jersey. We very much enjoy each other’s company, so catching up and sharing stories from the year is an annual highlight for me. Some of my family members live in California, some of them are in the New York City area, and others are in Massachusetts. That makes it difficult to connect, so we all make it a point each summer to schedule the same vacation time so that we can meet at the same Jersey Shore location at which we have been vacationing together since we were young children. It is always a fun and relaxing way to spend time and see everyone. I also was able to do some cultural things in New York City that were on my “to do” list. I saw the Broadway productions of the plays Hamilton and To Kill a Mockingbird, visited some museums in the city, took in a couple of Red Sox (baseball) games, and found time to catch up with many friends who live in in the New York and Boston areas.

Professionally, one thing I spent time on was meeting with a good friend of mine, the Headmaster of my former high school, who now works in the US for the most important organization that does accreditation for private high schools and colleges. “Accreditation” means that an official agency comes and looks at everything about your school -- the curriculum and the faculty, the students and the facilities, the finances, the canteen services, the admissions office and every other aspect of the program -- and makes sure all is as it should be. You know, “accurate.” And, if all aspects of your school are judged to be strong and consistent with the way you advertise them to be for your families, you get official accreditation that certifies that you are a good school doing things the right way. In the United States, Canada, England and Australia, being accredited as a school is very important, because that means everyone looks at your program and says “good school.” It is, essentially, getting official approval by informed experts who understand education. The organization my friend works with is the most well respected accrediting agency in the US; they do accreditation for all of the top colleges, universities and private high schools. They are, for the first time, looking into accrediting International High Schools (in China) and are in the early stages of investigating how the process might work here. It has never been done before, so it promises to be an interesting adventure. EduChina would certainly like to be one of those schools that becomes approved in this way, so I met with my friend to talk about how I might be able to play a role in such an undertaking.

Will there be anything new you wanna bring for the coming semester, in terms of our new teacher, new course, new textbook...

1. I’m very much looking forward to our second year on the Daxing campus, and hope it will be a “settling in” year now we know how things work. We learned a lot last year about how to take best advantage of our facilities, so mostly I want this year to be a stabilizing experience. At at the same time, however, we will not be standing still! For example, we are launching a new Japanese Program, that’s something I’m excited about. We are introducing three AP courses into our twelfth grade program, and, in fact, our twelfth grade program all by itself is a new feature. We will have eight or nine new teachers joining us this year (a combination of foreigners and bilingual Chinese instructors) and it’s always exciting to learn from fresh perspectives and different experiences that these newcomers bring to the table. We are also strengthening our Home Teacher program by devoting more resources and attention in that area. So, between some new curriculum offerings, a new Japanese Program, new teachers, a new grade level -- there will be novelty alongside the familiar things.

What are your expectations for freshmen students and old students?

Here is what I hope our students will dedicate themselves to in the year ahead. I want them to do four things: One, I want them to work hard and give the best of their ability. Two, I want them to be honest in their intentions, honest about trying to improve, honest about listening to their teachers’ suggestions, honest about their own commitment to achieving their goals. Third, I want them to learn from their mistakes, because they are going to make mistakes, and so are we as adults. That’s OK. What is important is for all of us to learn from our errors and become better for the experience. And finally, I want them to be kind. I want them to be kind to each other, kind to their teachers, and kind to the environment and their surroundings. I want them to be especially kind to those who don’t get the notice they should – the canteen workers, the gardeners, the guards, the housekeeping staff members -- who put in so much effort to make it possible for students to have the opportunity to make their lives better. Work hard, have honest intentions, learn from mistakes and be kind. It’s a good list.

My way of summarizing this for students is to use a simple phrase: “Be good today, and be better tomorrow.” That’s what I want them to do every single day. Be good today, be just a little bit better tomorrow. If every one of us in the community can achieve this daily goal, it will be a terrific year!
