托尼由于夜总会关门装修，也亟需一份**。有个朋友建议他去参加一位音乐博士为了寻找司机所举办的面试。当他到达豪华公寓后，发现这位博士是个名叫唐的黑人古典乐钢琴家，钢琴家正需要一个司机，负责在他举办南方巡演时的接送**。当然，两人心里都十分清楚，在二十世纪六十年代种族隔离严重的南部地区，他们很容易身陷麻烦之中，但托尼需要钱，而唐需要一个能照顾他的专业司机。给托尼付钱的唱片公司给了他一本“绿皮书”指南，上面列着当地黑人可以吃饭睡觉的地方，因为很多旅馆和餐厅都是只限白人 。

When Tony Lip (Mortensen), a bouncer from an Italian-American neighborhood in the Bronx, is hired to drive Dr. Don Shirley (Ali), a world-class Black pianist, on a concert tour from Manhattan to the Deep South, they must rely on "The Green Book" to guide them to the few establishments that were then safe for African-Americans. Confronted with racism, danger-as well as unexpected humanity and humor-they are forced to set aside differences to survive and thrive on the journey of a lifetime.

The title Green Book was a guide book for African Americans travel. This book was written by a postman. On that book, it mentions all hotels for colored people to live and some points that colored people need to know. It is a result of Jim Crow Law and now it is not used any more.

The story happened in 1962. And in 1961, president Kennedy passed Affirmative Action which had a huge influence on African American and women’s social status. The real Don. Shirley decided to tour to promote Affirmative Action. Although this movie is based on true stories that happened in history, some additional descriptions and details makes these two character more than historical figures.

In the movie, the bodyguard, Tony Lip, is a number of the Mafia(黑手党)，but he prefers to live with his family, so , he quit. He became a bouncer at a club. The first fight happened in the movie is that he punched a men who works for another gang. We can see that he is fearless to do anything and forthright in character. Also, we can see that he and his family are definitely racists though a detail at the beginning of the movie. When two black workers come to their home to fix tubes, almost every man in his family came too, because they are worried that these two blacks would do something to Tony’s wife. After the two workers left, Tony throws cups which workers had used in to trash bin. White people at that time, held very negative opinions to colored people, so the family afraid that these two black men would hurt Tony’s wife.

He loses his job for a while, since the club had to spruce up. He won a $50 bit for eating 26 hotdogs in an hour. Another detail is that he pawned his watch. So thanks to luck, he went to Doc. Shirley’s driver interview. In the waiting room, there is no black people who came for this job. Doc.’s steward is an Asian-Indian. For the first time Tony and Don see each other, Tony, as a white, sits on a small chair; Don, as a black, sits on a higher throne. Don lives in such a big house but no one live with him. He is so lonely that he doesn’t know any popular black singer, black people’s lives, and black people’s culture. He can’t fit in white society and he can’t be accepted by his people either. He tries to get respect so he sit on his high throne living in his kingdom. Don wants Tony not even drive for him but also serve his cleaning and some other things done by servants. Of course Tony refused, but they finally made an agreement: Tony only drive and take care of Don, and every show needs a Stanway piano.

At the beginning of the tour, Don sits right behind Tony, because Tony is too talkative , so Don tries to avoid these useless talks. During the trip, Don and Tony have to live in different room. On the balcony, Tony saw Don was so lonely himself. Don wants to drink in a bar, but some white men beat him. Tony saved Don by pretending he has a gun. When their tour was in Indiana, a theater worker didn’t provide a Stanway piano and abused Don. Tony gave him a slap in the face, then at night, a Stanway piano was prepared. The second time Don was saved by Tony was in a bath house. Don had a fight with another white man. The police thought they were homo and decided to arrest them. Tony bribed cops and Don free again. Tony met his gang friends in another city. They can’t believe Tony work for a colored man and tried to persuade him work for gang again. Don knew their language and wants to keep Tony with him because he is kind of rely on Tony. Tony promised Don that he won’t leave and went to meet his friends.
