JCU’s Master of Rural and Remote Medicine equips you with the advanced academic and research expertise to meet the unique challenges faced in rural and remote contexts.
Study eight core subjects, then choose from a variety of elective subjects that are grouped according to your area of interest. This flexible, 1.5 years full-time (or part-time equivalent) course is studied through a combination of online and block mode study options. The Master of Rural and Remote Medicine has specialisations available in internal medicine, emergency medicine, paediatrics, mental health and population health.

Graduates pursue careers in health and medicine in rural, remote, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.
You could find employment as a rural generalist doctor, nurse, or allied health professional, or as a clinical supervisor, researcher or medical educator.
Course learning outcomes
Master of Rural and Remote Medicine will enable doctors working in rural and remote Australia to complete a postgraduate qualification to enhance their clinical, academic and research skills at an advanced level. They will develop advanced knowledge, skills and attitudes to appraise and evaluate rural and remote clinical practice, academic work and research in community based settings.
Graduates will be committed to responsible, ethical and professional practice in leadership roles in rural and remote medicine. They will continue to develop life-long learning and to apply evidence in their professional work.
Graduates of the Master of Rural and Remote Medicine will be able to:
Apply advanced and integrated knowledge by considering current evidence for evaluating cultural, social, community, population and health factors influencing the practice of rural and remote medicine
Develop advanced skills in a clinical area of relevance to rural and remote medicine
Investigate, analyse and synthesise the complexities of health and health care delivery in rural and remote communities and exercise autonomy and expert judgement to respond with appropriate human resource management, teaching and other skills
Critically evaluate policies and professional and legal statutory requirements applicable to rural medical practitioners
Interpret ethical medical practice respecting patient’s confidentiality and privacy at both an individual patient level and community level
Evaluate, reflect on and apply new and existing evidence in the chosen specialty area of relevance to rural and remote medicine
Demonstrate a high level of personal autonomy and accountability for own professional development through reflective practice and self‐directed learning
Design, implement, communicate and reflect upon a research project in an area of relevance to rural and remote medical practice.
