专业概况

The M.S. in Geography is a two-year program of study that allows students to pursue advanced coursework across a range of subfields of geography (see Department research areas) while conducting independent research or a professional project in coordination with a faculty adviser. Two degree plans are available: Plan A (31 credits) includes a thesis on original research; Plan B (36 credits) replaces the thesis with a professional paper.

Department of Geography faculty members possess a range of interdisciplinary strengths and expertise in the areas of human, human-environment and physical geography, supported by the use of computational technologies such as geographic information systems, remote sensing, modeling and data analytics. The faculty is renowned for its teaching and mentoring, with individual members having garnered university, state and national teaching awards.

Department research specialties span the full range of the discipline, including:

• Hydrologic modeling
• Urban and economic geography
• Cultural and historical geography
• Political geography and geopolitics
• Qualitative methods
• Human-Environment relations and political ecology
• Urban and regional planning
• GIS and geotechnologies

Candidates for the MS in Geography must satisfy the general requirements of the Graduate School. Courses should be selected to complement the student’s fields of interest and enhance his/her conceptual and research skills. The Advisor should be consulted in the selection of courses. The “Program of Study” form is to be completed by the student with the assistance of his/her Advisor and Graduate Committee by the end of the third semester of residency at UNR. This form requires the signature approval of each committee member, the Department’s Graduate Director and the Graduate Dean. Two degree plans are available: Plan A (31 credits) includes a thesis on original research; Plan B (36 credits) replaces the thesis with a non-thesis option. Since two credits (GEOG 796) is S/U, no more than 1 other credit with an S/U grade can be used toward the degree.

为来自中国的学生设计 Bachelor’s degree or recognized equivalent from an accredited institution. Eligibility for admission with a 3-year bachelor's degree are determined on a case by case basis. Minimum grade point average (on a 4.0 scale): 2.75 for a master’s degree. TOEFL: 550 (paper) or 79 (internet), IELTS: 6.5 (academic version).
