专业概况

This is one of the only awards in the country that has been specifically designed to prepare students for work in offender management and community rehabilitation. This course offers the opportunity to study traditional criminology with the additional option to specialise in penology and offender management. The prison population has doubled in size over the last twenty years and critics argue that offender management has never been so challenging. This course provides exciting new modules for people interested in criminology and crime; however the course offers a pathway for people with an interest in prisons and punishment, mental well-being and offender management. The course is one of the first of its kind to offer modules dedicated to mental assessment for non-mental health professionals and identifying suicide and self-harm. We provide our students with the opportunity to concentrate on traditional themes - to further understand the past, the present and to consider what might happen in the future. On this course, we take a practical approach and combine academic research with analysis. We arrange for our students to interact with our partner organisations, such as HMP Dovegate and HMP Stafford. Prison staff will take an active role on the course, delivering lectures and feedback; providing the perfect opportunity to develop vital work-based skills. We encourage you to think about why people break the law and what the state does with them. You will apply criminological theories to workplace settings such as prisons or community rehabilitation services. Our course will be one of the first in the country that has modules covering topics such as serial killers and child abuse as stand-alone modules. Many of our modules will be delivered in conjunction with the School of Life Sciences and Education and will address the demand for people in the industry who are required to be alert to these phenomena. All students who successfully complete the award and meet additional criteria are guaranteed a job interview with Serco Custodial Services. Many of our graduates have gone on to secure roles in the justice sector, HM Prison Service, The Prisons and Probation Ombudsman, Ministry of Justice, Civil Service, National Probation Service, community justice, community rehabilitation, policing, and The National Crime Agency.
