小君: Kao Kue老师您好!据我了解,您作为越战之后的移民家庭后裔,出生在美国费城。您不仅是一位老师,同时还是一名诗人、作家和教育家,很多的身份(笑),请问您最喜欢您的哪一个身份呢?为什么?SIBS:Hello, Ms. Kue. As I know that you born in Philadelphia after the Vietnam war. You are not only a teacher, but also a poet, writer and educator. Which title you like the best? Why?

Kao:我认为自己是诗人,作家,同时也是一名教师,这些头衔或角色并不是一定要互相排斥的。作为一名教师,我们需要能够将扎实的、讲故事的技巧付诸实践。教师必须能够清楚地向学生传达一个想法或是概念。像诗人和作家一样,教育者挑战的是观众/学生对他们周围的世界进行深入调查和思考的能力。诗人,作家和教育者也必须具备广泛的知识,以便有效地进行沟通和教学。我一直是作家、诗人的身份,所以当我成为一名教师时,这些技能自然会转移到我的教学实践中。一位高效的艺术家和教师会参与批判性的活动,主动倾听、并根据观众/学生的需要,量身定制他们的故事和沟通方式。从本质上讲,讲故事是教师用来教育的一种模式。Kao:I consider myself a poet/storyteller and teacher, and these titles or roles are not necessary exclusive of each other. As a teacher, one needs to be able to put into practice solid storytelling skills. The teacher has to be able to clearly relay an idea or concept to an audience. Like a poet/storyteller, the educator challenges the audience member to investigate and think deeply about the world around them. The poet/storyteller and the educator must also have extensive knowledge to draw upon to effectively communicate and teach. I have always been a writer and storyteller so when I became a teacher, these skills naturally transferred into my teaching practice. An effective artist and teacher engage in critical active listening and tailor their stories and their communication style to draw in the audience. Essentially, storytelling is a mode for which a teacher uses to educate.

2、来君诚寻求教育旅程的起点

小君:您之前在费城一直教授小学1-2年级,有阅读、写作、社交学习、数学、科学等等。您来到君诚学校也是即将教授小学2年级。请问您认为来君诚会是怎样的一个挑战呢?您为什么会选择君诚作为您在中国教育旅程的起点呢?SIBS:You have been teaching grade 1 through grade 2 in Philadelphia, reading, writing, social learning, math, science and others. You come to SIBS to teach grade 2 in primary school. Why you chose SIBS as the beginning of your teaching journey in China?

Kao:我一直对中国文化和历史很感兴趣,我想我(来到君诚后)会在中国生活很长一段时间吧。我的苗族血统将我的家族历史追溯到中国,我所属的部落被称为苗族。几千年前,我的祖先起源于中国。因为我对自己的历史感到好奇,所以我也研究过中国的文化和历史。我很高兴能来到中国以及君诚学校。虽然我对中文知之甚少,但无论是学校的教职员工,还是北京当地的每个人,他们都非常热情,给了我很大的帮助。我是在去年2月,和Dan Mock(君诚外方校长)进行了深入的沟通和访谈,Dan是一位拥有多年教学经验的校长。他分享说,君诚学校目前正在经历惊人的增长,校领导层非常看重和支持优秀、合格的教师。Kao:I have always been interested in Chinese culture and history and I have wanted to live in China for a long time. My Hmong heritage traces my family history back to China where my tribe is referred to as Miao. My ancestors originated in China thousands of years ago. Because I am curious about my history, I have researched Chinese culture and history as well. I am excited to be here at SIBS and China. Although I know so little Chinese, everyone from the staff to the Chinese locals have been very helpful in helping me navigate local institutions and businesses. Back in February of last year I had intensive interviews with Dan Mock, who has many years of teaching experience. He shared that the school is going through an incredible growth and the leadership is dedicated to support qualified teachers.

小君: 对于小学生来说,他们每个人都是差异化的,如何根据他们不同的兴趣,培养良好的阅读习惯呢?SIBS:All elementary students are different. How to help them develop the habit of reading base on their own interest?

Kao:在过去的九年里,我一直在教阅读和写作。我在以前的学校专门开设了一个名为“读者和作家工作室”的课程。差异化是教学的重要组成部分,因此,教师必须了解学生的优点和缺点。我要教给学生的件事——就是每个人都是读者。我们必须每天阅读,我们阅读的内容必须能够吸引学生。我会调查并了解我的每个学生,把他们也视为读者。我还将带来各种类型的教师的教案范本,让我的学生对阅读充满热情。对于低年级学生来说,尽早灌输对文学的热爱,是至关重要的。Kao:I have been teaching reading and writing for the past nine years. My previous school taught a curriculum called Readers and Writers Workshop. Differentiation is an important part of teaching so a teacher must know their students strengths and weaknesses. The first thing I will be teaching my students is that everyone is a reader. We must read every single day and what we read must be engaging. I will survey and get to know each of my students as a reader. I will also bring into the classroom mentor texts of various genres to get my students enthusiastic about reading. It is crucial for early educators to instill of love of literature.

4、君诚的每个孩子都有可能成为一名作家

小君:我们都知道,很多小学生都将写作视为一大难题,对此您有什么好的方法和技巧分享给大家吗?小学阶段有可能成为一名作家吗(笑)?SIBS:Many elementary students meet difficulties in writing, can you share some advices for them? Can a elementary student become a writer?

Kao:类似于阅读,写作是一个过程。世界上并没有不善于写作的孩子,也没有一种所谓“标准”的写作方式。我将教授给君诚的孩子们非常强大和实用的技巧,用来提高他们的写作和实践。随着学生对写作的过程越来越熟悉,他们将会看到他们的写作不断改进。除此之外,教师每天与学生密切合作,为学生的作业提供反馈也很重要。学生练习写作的越多,他们就越会逐步提高、并获得更多关于文学和语言的知识。Kao:Similarly for reading, writing is a process. They are no bad writers and no single right way of writing. I will teach strong skills and practices that strong writers use to help their writing improve. As students become more familiar with the writing process, they will see their writing improve. It is also important for teachers to work closely with students every day to provide feedback for student work. The more students practice writing the student will gradually improve and acquire more knowledge about literature and language.
